Following a healthy diet can be a challenge for stressed-out college students.

The stress of college can sabotage a healthy lifestyle, especially when it comes to food and exercise. The cafeteria allows unlimited visits to the buffet. Vending machines stocked with chips and sweets beckon at all hours, and food breaks help you get through all-night cram sessions. Stress- relieving weekend activities are almost always accompanied by food and drink. The demands of class work can shove regular exercise aside; sleep becomes erratic and you're likely to get less than you need.

Wising up, eating better. Americans are getting savvier about their diets and exercise, according to a nationwide survey of 783 men and women by the American Dietetic Association. Asked about maintaining a healthful diet and engaging in regular exercise, 43 percent said, "I'm already doing it." In 2002, that number was 38 percent. People in the "I know I should" category — who understand a healthy lifestyle is critical but haven't done much to achieve it — numbered 38 percent, up from 30 percent in 2002. And just 19 percent of men and women put themselves in the "don't bother me" category — not believing that diet and exercise are important. That's down from 32 percent in 2002. More stats: When participants were asked to rank major and minor reasons for not wanting to do more to attain a balanced diet, 79 percent said they're satisfied with the way they eat, and 73 percent said they don't want to give up the foods they like. Only 41 percent said it was because they didn't understand diet and nutrition guidelines. In 2008, 40 percent said they were actively seeking more information on nutrition, up from 19 percent in 2000. Los Angeles Times

Unfortunately, his prey recently was my elderly golden retriever.

The students in Batya Metalitz's advanced class were no strangers to the handstand or other difficult poses, but she still encouraged them to acknowledge that some of the things she would ask them to do in the two-hour session would be unnerving.

Keeping muscles in balance. We know that professional athletes regularly suffer injuries, but amateur athletes can experience serious pain as well. Researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel surveyed 98 amateurs in two bowling clubs. They were asked to assess musculoskeletal disorders as well as other factors. About 62 percent of bowlers said they experienced musculoskeletal symptoms in one or more joints during the last year. To minimize problems, stretching is always important, the study's lead author said, but so is exercising muscles that don't get used that often. For example, tennis players and bowlers need to work their nondominant arms and shore up other muscle groups to balance any asymmetries. The study was published recently in the journal Work.
