The Pepper Pot is a colloquial name for the Old Town Hall in Godalming. It was constructed in 1814 and replaced the dilapidated Old Market House which had been the meeting place of the Godalming (hundred) Court for time immemorial. The Town Hall as it was officially known became the new meeting place for the Town Council, the Hundred Court and later on the Rural District Council. In the 1930's these institutions (except the Hundred Court which had been abolished) began meeting at the newly constructed Borough Hall where there was more room and the Pepper Pot (sometimes incorrectly called the "Pepper Box") became a museum. It is traditional at New Year's Eve for a young man from the town to climb the building and "moon" from the top.
