Tater Tots, also known as "Tots", is a registered trademark for a commercial form of hash browns, a side-dish made from deep-fried, grated potatoes. Tater tots are widely recognized for their crispiness, cylindrical shape and small size, similar to a miniature C Battery. This fact (and their ease of preparation) has made them amongst the world's most popular finger foods.
Tater Tots are commonly found in the U.S. in cafeterias and school lunch-counters, as well as the supermarket frozen food aisle and some fast food restaurants. In Australia, they are known as 'potato gems'. McCain Foods Limited calls their line of tater tots Tasti Taters. In some restaurants, they go by the moniker "Mexi-Nuggets".
Tater is a word considered humorous, possibly somewhat child-like; Tots may have been derived from their diminutive size, or because they are often served to children, and certainly because of the intended shoppe.

"NOT ONLY do I eat, I also am a Democrat," wrote Frank Sinatra in an intro to 1960's "Many Happy Returns: The Democrats' Cook Book, or How to Cook a G.O.P. Goose" (the sales of which helped buy TV air time for candidates). "Not only should every Democrat own a copy of this book, but he should load up all his or her friends, and even smuggle some copies into Pasadena and other points where the enemy is strong and square."
