The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival is known for being a fun and free event where kids and grown-ups can explore Asian-Pacific food and culture. But festivalgoers also should peruse its marketplace where vendors sell one-of-a-kind arts and crafts akin to those found in the open-air markets of Hong Kong, Manila, Seoul, Bangkok or Bombay. Thai home accessories, Chinese calligraphy and Japanese pottery are just a few of the treasures visitors can uncover. This eighth-annual festival is Saturday and Sunday at Sloan's Lake Park in northwest Denver. Details at cdbf.org.

RuMe Bags is a Denver-based company that recently launched a series of government-certified fair-trade reusable bags to meet the growing demand for stylish, environmentally conscious products. The company has opened a new kiosk at Park Meadows mall in Lone Tree (on the lower level next to J. Crew and Ann Taylor Loft). RuMe hopes shoppers will use its bags for mall trips, the gym, diapers, picnics, laundry and overnighters. But the bigger goal is to get consumers into thinking about how bags like these can reduce landfill waste. rumebags.com.

Now through 5 p.m. Saturday, the city and county of Denver is auctioning 28 pieces of original, old-growth redwood benches from Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which were installed when the venue opened in 1941. The benches are being replaced with a Brazilian lumber called ipe, which is pest- and fire-resistant. In addition to the reusable old wood, the city's online surplus auction site, which operates somewhat like eBay, is selling iPods, digital cameras, camcorders, Bose headphones, portable DVD players, a Nintendo DS and Sony Playstations. Details at success-auctions-online.com.

From "Marcella Says . . .," by Marcella Hazan. The ideal onions are cipolline onions, the small, flat yellow onions. Do not use pearl onions. The onions are ready to eat after three days, but they are even better if you keep them a while longer. They will keep at normal room temperature, but it does no harm to refrigerate them. They can be stored for months in a closed jar in the refrigerator with no loss of flavor, only a slight and negligible softening. Makes 1 dozen pickled onions.
